On the 21th of March Jack Dorsey tweeted: “5 yrs ago today, the eve of launching twttr to the company. Moving from @Biz, @florian & me, to all of our peers using it. Nervous. #twttr.”

It has been five years since the first tweet was sent out into the world. On the 21th of March 2006 Jack Dorsey sent out his first message; it was an automatic “just setting up my twitter” message. How little did he know?

Ever since the start of Twitter a lot has changed. In only five years it has become one of the most important platforms to share your favorite bar or what is going on in the world. Just look at what is happening in the Middle East. To celebrate its fifth birthday, we put together some interesting Twitter facts.

  • It took 3 years, 2 months and 1 day to go from the first to the billionth tweet.
  • Today it takes a week for users to send a billion tweets.
  • The average number of tweets that people send a day is 50 million.
  • The record of most tweets per four second is 6,939. This record was made during the earthquake in Japan.
  • The average number of new accounts over the last month is 460,000 a day
  • Twitter started with three employees. These days, 400 people are working for the social network.
  • America is the number one twitter country comprising 33.3 per cent of the total Twitter population. They are followed by India with 8.2 per cent. Japan is on number three with 7.9 per cent. Australia is on the 9th place in the top ten with 1.8 per cent.
  • In Australia, twitter grew over 3.200 percent between the beginning of January till April.
  • Most people tweet on Thursdays and Fridays.
